Gamma Ray Burst - what's left over?

It appears that GRBs are traceable to a specific point in the sky, but have not always been traced to specific stars. The question is this - if the source of a GRB is a particular binary star system, do those stars continue to exist, or do they disappear? The standard theory, as I understand it, is that a GRB is the birth cry of a black hole. Since black holes most likely don't exist, there's definitely a gap in understanding here.

Good point.

I say they continue to exist as we see various novas, and guess what?  They have stars inside the nebulae.  Stars might not die at all, but certainly the mainstream stellar model is nowhere near observational reality.
